Allowing hunters to track and communicate with each other to improve safety in crowded hunting land.

My Connection

Hunting has been part of my life as long as I can remember, and we have always been on land where others hunters are nearby, sometimes to a dangerous degree. Not to mention, hunters in the same party still need to communicate with each from short distances.

What's The Problem?

  • Crowded Land: as mentioned, many hunters use land where unknown hunters are nearby.

  • Group Communication: hunters in the same group still need to communicate from a distance.

  • Too Cold for a Phone: since most hunting is done during cold seasons, texting your group typically means removing your gloves and typing with cold hands, a universally disliked action.

  • Hunting Accidents: when placed in situations where hunters are unaware of the location of others, it creates high risk environments

  • Unknown Dogs: in many hunting scenarios, hunting dogs can be an unknown variable

Vision and Innovation

Going into sketching, my goal is to create a wearable device that allows hunters to quickly see and talk to those around them, all without taking their gloves off or fumbling through their pockets.

No Touch Screen

By avoiding the use of a touch screen, this final concept allows users to keep their gloves on and, with buttons on the side, allows users to see the screen the whole time they are navigating the UI.

User Interaction

  • Pinch-to-Press: with the buttons on the side, the user is able to use a pinching motion to press buttons without covering the screen.

  • Attachment Options: with the magnetic back plates, users can attach the device through their clothing or use the strap to wrap it around anything they might want to. This also opens the product up to an endless amount of modularity.

Flashlight

The built-in flashlight allows hunters who stay out until sundown to see their way home without holding a flashlight.

Dog Tags

The dog tag accessory lets hunters track their dogs and shares the location of other hunters nearby, to avoid creating dangerous situations.

User Interface

The device's UI allows the user to see the distance and direction of those close to them and filter through different categories, as well as send preset pings to those in their group.

Physical Prototype

Created using a 3D-printed shell with magnets and an acrylic screen cover, this model serves to understand the form factor and interaction techniques.
